Who is John Tynes?

IMG_1500.jpeg

John Tynes’ mother teased him as a child by telling him that he talked too much and that he was always a bit too eager to tell a story, truthful or not. Today, John has focused those young impulses in a more productive manner and is now an accomplished storyteller who relishes the dramatic moments of everyday life and turns them into compelling works of contemporary fiction. He believes that we can all learn from the travails of others, even imaginary ones, and deploys those learnings in stories that are sometimes a bit magical but always emotionally powerful.

John started his professional career with a degree in journalism and a special focus on photojournalism, working in corporate public relations while freelancing on the side until the flickering images on movie screens lured him into a decade-long and ultimately frustrating relationship with the film industry in Los Angeles. Eventually he experienced a personal epiphany about his role in society (it’s a long story . . . email him if you really want the details) and made a 90-degree turn into the completely different business of healthcare.

He acquired a medical degree in Texas and spent the next twenty years building a successful practice as an obstetrician-gynecologist along with a reputation as a skilled surgeon and a compassionate physician. He worked in California and Texas before settling into what he considers the geographic sweet spot of his current home in Denver, Colorado. Along the way, he evolved from clinical practice into medical staff leadership and ultimately into the role of a physician executive. He currently works as Chief Medical Officer in a large urban hospital, where he has oversight of the quality and safety of the care provided to patients.

Even as he grew in experience and achieved success as a physician, John continued to work creatively, writing stories and capturing images with an ear and eye for tales that convey the full spectrum of human experience – its highs and lows, its joys and its regrets, its ecstasies and its agonies. He writes of ordinary people in extraordinary situations and harvests the truths (and lies) that bedevil and entrance us all in our brief existence. His photography explores both exotic and mundane locales as it demonstrates the beauty of the world around us and the people who inhabit it.

John has been married for 28 years to his wife Irene, who is a Registered Nurse. They have three grown children, all of whom work in some form of public service. He is a long-time Airstream trailer owner (i.e., cult member) and has crisscrossed the USA and Canada multiple times with progressively longer silver trailers behind his progressively larger trucks. His guilty pleasure is that he is a devoted Disney geek and usually visits Disneyland or Disney World once or twice a year and has taken way too many Disney cruises along the way. He is a life member of MENSA (although he is pretty sure his father bribed someone to get him admitted). Oh, and he plays guitar . . . badly but enthusiastically.
